Remembering the Faith That

Shaped Australia

Hi,

As Christian Heritage Sunday comes around again (February 1st), I've been thinking about how much has changed in Australia. And how much hasn't. Our nation looks very different to the struggling settlement of 1788, yet in many ways we're still a people searching for hope, direction and something firm to stand on.

One of the first people to bring that hope to our shores was Reverend Richard Johnson. I've often pictured him on that hot February day, standing under a gum tree with a weary and unsettled crowd in front of him. His first sermon was from Psalm 116:12: What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? It must have sounded strange to people who had very little and were facing enormous hardship. But Johnson was reminding them that even in uncertainty, God was present and working.

That moment is part of our Christian heritage, but I don't think it's something we're meant to look at from a distance. It's a reminder of what anchors us. Our country is wrestling with big questions right now. About identity, truth, community, and what kind of future we want to build. And in the middle of that, it's important to remember that our foundations weren't formed out of fear or cynicism. They were shaped by people who believed that every life had value and that God's word could bring hope to anyone who heard it.

Christian Heritage Sunday is about recognising how deeply faith has influenced our laws and freedoms. Values like grace, forgiveness, and compassion for others were shaped by people who sought to follow Jesus and live out His teachings in everyday life. That's why Vision's mission matters more than ever. Every time we open the Bible together on air, every worship song we play and every testimony we share is another opportunity for someone to lift their eyes and realise that God has not abandoned this nation.

As we mark this day, I encourage you to thank God for His faithfulness through the generations, and pray for our country as it navigates uncertain days. Pray that people will rediscover the hope that first took root here.

Thank you for being part of the Vision family. Your support helps us keep pointing people from Australia and beyond back to the One who still brings light into dark places.
