Something fascinating has happened these past weeks.
I’m not usually a soccer follower, but strangely the Word Cup has found its way into many of my conversations – even initiated by me. I found myself listening for the results, commiserating with a French friend over his country’s loss and congratulating a Spanish colleague for her country’s win (and ironically, I don’t think any of us are big soccer followers usually).
For a little while, we shared something in common – which feels increasingly rare these days.
Sport has an amazing ability to bring us together – at least for a while. It can also bring out an ugly side too – punches thrown, abuse hurled, even riots when a team loses. Underneath it all, I think it’s an indicator of something we all long for:
A sense of purpose – a place to belong – and a reason to hope.
The older I get, the more convinced I become that those longings weren't put there by accident.
Ecclesiastes says that God has "set eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). That's probably why success, entertainment, possessions, or even the biggest moments in life never quite satisfy for long. They were never meant to carry the weight of our deepest hopes.
Only Jesus can do that.
Helping people look to Jesus is what we aim to do each day at Vision, which is why I was so encouraged by a comment we received this week from Vision supporter, Brian in Sydney, who simply said “Keep up your excellent Discipleship”. Thanks, Brian – we will!
I reckon what we do is actually pretty special - together we reach people right where they are with words of life and hope through Vision Christian Radio; or as people open The Word for Today; listen to a podcast on the Vision App; or by simply sharing a Bible verse – we help people tune their heart and mind into something better.
Wherever you find yourself this week , my prayer is that you would discover again that sense of purpose – your place to belong – and the reason to hope that is found only in Jesus. And it is our honour to help you in your journey.
