Opponents on the field. Brothers after.

Hi,

The World Cup has suddenly appeared everywhere. And it seems to have a way of pulling people in. You don’t need to follow soccer all year. But when it’s on… suddenly everyone has an opinion.

Everyone’s watching. Everyone’s talking. For a few weeks, the world feels a little more connected than it normally does.

But there was a moment this week that didn’t make the highlight reels.

Germany were playing Curaçao. Early in the game, midfielder Felix Nmecha scored his first World Cup goal. Instead of running to the corner flag, he dropped to his knees and pointed to the sky.

It was just a quiet “thank you Lord”.

And then after the final whistle, something even more unexpected happened. Players from Germany and Curaçao—who’d just spent 90 minutes competing—met in the middle of the pitch. They put their arms around each other, bowed their heads and prayed together.

Opponents a few minutes earlier. Standing together in faith, the next.

Nmecha summed it up simply afterwards, “During the game we’re opponents. After the game, we’re brothers.”

It’s a good reminder today, isn’t it? It’s easy to focus on what divides people—teams, countries, opinions.

But every now and then you see a glimmer of something beautiful that cuts straight through all of that.

And you remember we’re not as far apart as it can sometimes feel.

Maybe that’s a glimpse of what it looks like to follow Jesus together.

Not uniforms. Not always on the same “team”. But recognising something much deeper that connects us.

As the Bible puts it: “…you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

I pray that that encourages you this week.

Blessings,
