Psalm of a Single Father

Dear God, help me to be a better person, a better father, a better friend, a better husband.

Dear God, help me to become whom You want me to be.

Dear God, help me to like Spongebob Squarepants reruns.

Dear God, help me not to get cranky when my daughter leaves a mess wherever she goes.

Dear God, help me to watch another episode of How to Train Your Dragon.

Dear God, help me to be of service to those dads out there who may need some help.

Dear God, help me to understand the suffering of people across the world.

Dear God, forgive me for cursing the bloody dog when he does his business inside! instead of out.

Dear God, thank You for allowing me to see another day.

You know I am an old bloke. I should be retired but I can’t — I have a 9-year-old daughter to take care of. I am a single dad. I work very early in the mornings.

One of the things I like about that, is that I get to see the sun rising over the ocean every morning. And every morning I thank God for allowing me to see it. And just before, I get to see the stars and what a beautiful sight it is. I really recommend it.

Every morning, a look into the sky convinces me of the reality of the BIGFELLA.

Don’t get me wrong, the scars are there. A missed life, of mistakes, of missed opportunities, of injustices. Am I bitter? I hope not.

That’s like getting a glass of poison and instead of giving it to your enemy, you finish up drinking it yourself. If you are going through hard times, get up early one day and take a look up at the stars just before sunrise, and maybe, if you think you could, if you can muster the strength, say, thank You, just for the fact that you are able to see it!

And if you can, get yourself to a DIDS meeting, even online, or reach out to whatever is available in your area. Help is out there and it’s OK to get it.

Dear God, thank You for being there.

Dear God, forgive me for calling You the BIGFELLA, I’m Aussie, what more can I say.
